He certainly ticks all the boxes - private school, double-barrelled name, plays at Lords, on first name terms with Straussy.

Not sure about the double barreled name. We haven't had many of those.

A digression - does anyone know whether the Sussex CCC has a motto?

If not I propose "Intercluderent aut mori" which, according to Google Translate, means "Block or Die".

Good point. I don't think England have had a double-barreled named player since I've been watching cricket. Cant even think who the last one was - unless you count Raman Subba Row (and that's not really double-barreled)

"Erant solutus" which roughly translated means "were loose".

It doesn't: it means "they block off or to die"

You'd need to use the imperative: Intercludete aut Morimini or better still, the subjunctive

I think oppilare would be the better verb though

You need Rex Cathedra here

This motto thing is tricky. I appreciate your benign pedantry.

Machan 20 off 18 balls. Has he forgotten the club motto - "Intercluderent / oppilare aut mori"??
