Doesn't really mean that much. Probably look at any business in the land and they are probably paying more wages than they have previously! As for players, I would suspect that Ulloa was on a relatively low wage. He came from Spanish second division club where there's hardly any money, especially when you consider the economic situation in Spain at the time. Orlandi was, by all accounts, on a big whack as was probably Kuszczak but I doubt Barnes was a really high earner as he was young when he came. If he was then why did he leave!!!

Given that we paid £2m for Ulloa, I rather suspect not. You don't make a pretty major (for us) outlay on a player like that and then get away with paying him buttons. He'd have been on a fair old whack off the back of the deal that brought him here.

Where does the academy fit into your thinking on this subject?

My posts were based on finding talent who would be classed as instant 1st team material. Finding younger talent to bring through the development set up is a different game altogether IMO.
The academy is certainly an exciting development for us.

I may be proven wrong but I very much doubt we are going to get rid of the recruitment team, even if the head of department leaves for what ever reason. As I have pointed out on other threads, they have restructured which suggests they have behind the scenes identified areas where it hasn't worked correctly. The recruitment team builds up a scouting network which the club controls and owns the data/information gathered. Just like any company, this team has targets and has to answer to where it fails. In an ideal world the manager should be using this resource to his advantage and work for him, but they will be bound by a budget and restraints set by the business. Oscar didn't use this resource according to Bloom, Hyppia came too late in the window.

There is no gaurentee Hyppia would have made better signings within the budget, but there is no doubt he should have got better results from the players he had at his disposal.

I know this board is keen to see the back of the Burker, but isn't anyone stopping and thinking:-

'why would a sponsor be told the most sensitive information possible to know?'

A little titbit of info to keep the sponsor sweet and renew a lucrative sponsorship that might be lost ?

Faith restored in TB if true.

Agree with that. Hopefully is true.

Burke has patently failed in his role, player scouting and recruitment under his reign has failed. Everyone seems agreed that the finding of Ulloa and his eventual signing had nowt to do with Burke. TB may have tightened the finances, but the club's transfer fee spending and annual wages bill is still more than decent, so Burke has/had money to work with in a very exciting and privileged position. You only have to look at Derby, Bournemouth, Ipswich and M'boro to see Burke's counterparts doing a great job on not dissimilar budgets.

I'm hoping Burke is shown the door for the sake of the Albion.

Nobody is saying that. We are saying there has to be accountability for the debacle of the summer. Whoever was responsible for spending the cash in the did a very poor job. I dont know who it was and so Im not pointing fingers, but whoever it was did a shit job. Things have to change. Let the manager identify players and let the lawyers see of the deal can be done.If not then the manager identifies the next player. A manager must be fully accountable for league position as against budget. Yes he needs oversight because the contracts are worth millions but last summers disaster cannot be repeated.

Agreed. If you expect the Manager to get results on the pitch he knows the players he wants. He then has to make sure that some of those fall into budget and then the "suits" take over to try and close the deal. Having someone else, Burke in this case, identifying players and then asking the Manager to work with them just does not make sense. You can't blame the Manager if he has trouble getting the best out of a player he does not rate. If the Manager identifies the player then he has got the player HE wants and if that goes belly up he is to blame and is at least sacked on a basis that he had the responsibility of his downfall and not someone else with everything out of his control. I know that the club said that Hyypia had input, but i am not sure that was the case otherwise what really was the point of Burke's role. He has fallen well short of identifying quality and I would like him to come out on video and explain exactly what he does day in day out. The club say he is looking at hundreds of players a week. Well we could all do that, seems like a job for the boys to me and one the club could save thousands on if it was made redundant.

Tony Bloom has repeatedly said Garcia/Hyppia had the final say, also the department should work for them and scout any players they have identified. It was also said that Garcia wasn't communicating with this team and for whatever reason his targets weren't appropriate. They both had also said they weren't comfortable with doing the recruiting side themselves. It's a scouting network FFS, if they weren't doing it then Hyppia would have his own team doing it - or just using his contacts to identify players, but would still need to send someone to get scout that player. It's still the same process, the players still need a portfolio created on them, just the club own the information. Other than Bergkamp, what other players have been bought that the manager in charge at that time hasn't wanted? Bergkamp being a development player so doesn't even count. Toko was Garcia's player. I dont expect the team to go if Burke goes, and expect a new head of football operations instead.

They have though, plenty of people are outraged at the use of a database to collect information and watching DVDs of players, like anything else is going to be used.

Personally I have no problem with David Burke and would be disappointed to see him go. Sure he has, in hindsight, made mistakes, but show me any scout/ director of football or manager who hasn't. Played a huge part in the training ground and academy which will in a years produce some top players.
He was asked to replace players who went to the top flight which was never going to be easy and I firmly believe that those he has helped bring in are far better than current showing.

Did Hypia buy the players? If so then he deserves to go. Whoever was responsible for the summer did a very poor job in spending the transfer budget. If you are "in the know" and you can say that those players were Hypia's then the next question is why did it take us so long to part company with him?

Charlie Austin, Danny Ings, Jamie Vardy, there s probably more. Lifes hard, but if you want success you have to work at it. There is a huge amount of talent out there, it just needs to be found
Wise words.

There are more managers with control of the transfer budget that have made mistakes. Burke's only saving grace from the last transfer window is that short amount of time he had to work with the manager who would be using the players. It's difficult to judge someone without giving them the stability and continuity their role requires. Both Baldock and COG have all been able to find the net in the past, but the manager needs to supply them correctly with the right tactics.

I didn't say that. The summer didn't go to plan. We took too long to get Hyppia in, he didn't have time to build a squad and work with the recruitment team. Are the players brought in completely useless, even COG has got championship goals in a poor team. They were all a gamble perhaps but if Dale, Kemy (who got injured after his best ever game for us), March, Crofts all stayed fit, our midfield wouldn't look half as bad as it does now.

The problem for blood and public executions is sometimes just a tweak to the system, and learn from mistakes is needed. The recruitment team had a reshuffle and then Bennett and Bent come in, we will never know what would have happened if Hyppia took us into the transfer window.
