Is there such thing as a Sussex, or even Brightonian accent?

No. There is a generic south east accent, but that's about it.....

You must then remember that it was not called Brighton when you originated but Brighthelmstone !

Or possibly even Bristelmestune. That's how it appeared in the Doomsday Book. I'm not sure when it changed.

Brighton accent is not mockney, I was born and grew up in Brighton and do not pretend to speak like a Londoner, proper Eastenders do not sound like Brighton people.
Northerners think we are Cockneys most of the time.

Can't believe people are saying there isn't one! There are plenty of "poyple" in "ployces" like Uckfield with a strong Sussex accent. They pronounce nearly all of their vowels as "ooooyyyyy".

Old cricket team mate of mine came from a village near Uckfield, he was a prime example of that.

Brighton people might sound like South Londoners. They don't sound anything like East Londoners or Essex boys.

We are all ex Palace .........well actually i am a 13th century original Brighton peasant,lower town fisherman,i fought the French on the beaches you know..

My surname is Irish in origin, but it appears that a large group moved from Ireland around the 16th century, the most of which settled in the East Sussex area. A look at the 1841 census shows that Sussex had double the amount of any other part of the country. It may be that our ancestors bemoaned the constant French invasions over the odd fish supper.

When I was at uni, I had a friend who claimed there was no such thing as Sussex accent as "all southerners speak the same". When I said there was, she asked me to demonstrate, I wasn't sure how to do this until I heard the bloke next to me at the bar order his drinks in a Sussex burr. I told my friend that this guy was from close to Brighton, she asked him and he was from Haywards Heath.She believed me after that, so, yes, there is a definite local accent

we heard a young lady talking on the TV while we lived in Wales and both immediately said she was from Brighton, we had to re-watch the news later to be sure
it really is more obvious in the ladies though
blokes do sound like they are from London or Landon

And it's Brichtelmeston & Hove Albion.... FC By far the hardest to pronounce team... the world has ever seen. (Except some of those from Norway).
