What a ridiculous comment. If Gerrard is overrated you know absolutely nothing about football.

Also one of the very few players who can be called loyal as he could have earned a lot more money had he followed the pay cheque but he stayed with the club he supported all his life.

Great player and a great ambassador for the English game. More so than Beckham in my opinion.

I think he is overrated.

This is how I feel about it and for me it sums up the general attitude towards playing for England. Essentially Gerrard is saying he can play at a level good enough to represent Liverpool in the premier league and champions league and would rather do that than represent his country.

I don't think he's saying that at all!

What he actually said was that now LFC are back in the CL he feels he cannot do an effective job for England as well. He obviously feels his body can't do it and is being honest.

He makes it very clear that the CL was the deciding factor.

A very good player, BUT... I distinctly recall Liverpool fans burning their Gerard shirts in the street after he announced he would be leaving Liverpool as they would not meet his price on himself, only for the club to come up with the extra cash the following day.
Also, an ambassador for the English game should not dive in an attempt to con a referee in to awarding a penalty, in any game, to do it whilst wearing an England shirt against Andorra is heinous.

Yes he has said he cannot play as many games so has chosen to withdraw from England rather than reducing his club appearances. That's picking your club over country is it not?

Not sure he can be tarred with the actions of the 'fans' can he? They burned his shirt, he's overrated......?!

Ref diving, no it's not great is it but sadly it's the world class players that do it. It almost seems you have to cheat to be classed as a world beater: Suarez. Ronaldo. Robben. The list goes on. Can't see how a dive detracts from his footballing ability

Looking at some of the comments on here it makes sense why some BHA fans are so critical of club signings as there seem to be quite a few that think SG is overrated FFS.

Never mind the fact that EVERY manager he has ever played for thinks he is first class but would they know?!!

No, of course not!

Liverpool 'own' him and pay his wages, he can't just say I'll sit this one out boss as England have a game next week can he?

I was addressing the loyalty, and willingness to not earn his full potential that you credited him with by pointing out that he had effectively told his club,"pay me what I want or I am off". Liverpool fans burning shirts bearing his name demonstrates how they felt about that act of great loyalty, until the club stumped up the extra cash.

Diving detracts from his role as "a great ambassador for English football", particularly when he does it in an England shirt and even more so against opposition that we should expect to beat soundly. Did you read the first five words I posted?

How many games do England play a year and given the club sides are not playing at the time what prevents Gerard from being able to feature when he will be perfectly fit to play in both the champions league and premier league? I don't but this he can't cope nonsense as if that was the case Liverpool would also be reducing his appearances not increasing them.

I don't see Pirlo at 35 years of age struggling with any balance between club and country. Dress it up how you want this is another arrogant English player calling the shots when it comes to representing his country. The same players who choose what friendlies they rock up to during the season.

If they make that lumpen ball of sulk the national captain then I really am giving up on England.

He doesn't strike me as a leadership material so I doubt he will get the gig.

If Rooney gets the England captaincy I will really give up all hope in the national team. Not that we have many options, Hart would be my pick.

One of the best of a generation. Not the player he was for his club but still one of the best in his generation. At his peak could really take a game by the throat. Will be missed but england as a whole do require a complete overhall

Cheers Steven :clap2:

Time to move on now though. This does leave the issue of who is to be the Captain? I'd be amazed if Lampard continued so that really does just leave Rooney as the most senior player.

Depressing isn't it

thank god for that! one more overrated player gone.

114 caps for England, what an amazing achievement to play for your country that number of times! A succession of England managers obviously rated him.

I suppose even the most successful get used to criticism from the motley scrotes who consider it an amazing achievement if they manage to visit the toilet without wetting the floor.

Sussex but not by the sea
Sven should have built the team around Gerrard between 2005-8 but instead chose to build it around a truly overrated and limited player in brand Beckham. The rest is history....

1. Pirlo averages 43 matches a season including Europe, and he plays in a low tempo league. Gerrard with Champions League football is likely to play 50+ matches in a high tempo league.

2. International football is about playing tournaments a month after the end of the season when players are knackered. Seven matches including two or three bouts of extra time would be beyond a lot of players aged 34. Gerrard is too old and battle weary now. It's no coincidence that the team that just won the World Cup was packed with young players.

Totally agree. As it's unlikely he'll play in the next major tournament, a sound decision that avoids a potential headache for Hodgson. Wouldn't be a disaster for England if Rooney did the same, the sycophancy surrounding him by media, pundits and team-mates fly in the face of what the ordinary fan sees when he's wearing an England shirt. He's had plenty of chances and achieved nothing, sadly. We need to learn from Germany, decide on a system and then select the players who can fit into it, not the other way round. There are potentially a reasonable sized pool of young English players playing for the top clubs this year, let's hope Roy put's his trust in these guys, with PL, CL and England experience, I hope these guys can really push us on.

I think Gerrard has made the right call but this leaves Hodgson more exposed because his captain was generally well-respected in the media and always stood behind his manager.

The knives are out for Hodgson in many quarters, Lampard hasn't officially retired from England but now the press have a stick to beat Roy with; if he leaves Lampard out some will say he's left out the only decent captain alternative going into the crucial September Euro qualifiers, but if he plays him and makes him captain and he's rubbish he'll get slated for picking a has-been.

You wonder whether Gerrard's decision is due in part to him really not rating the kids coming through. In all likelihood Gerrard would make the Euro 16 squad and have one last crack at England glory, so you could read into this he thinks he'd be wasting his time as this crop aren't good enough.
