Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes. Proof that we can all be swayed by hype. Pretentious doesn`t begin to cover it.

I love that album. Oh well....

Am I allowed a 2 album band?

The Pipettes first album was one of my albums of the noughties, the second where they dropped the Phil Spector sound for bland disco was a terrible career move. That second album deserves to be described as appalling.

Absolutely this will bells on.

Down In The Groove - Bob Dylan redefines unessential

(I'm not counting 'Dylan' as I believe that was released as a stitch up by his old label)

I reckon 'Under The Red Sky' is pretty much a piece of shit as well but can't confirm as I've not listened to it for 20 years and have no inclination towards revisiting it.

Shot of Love is nearly as crap as the record sleeve, but has 'Every Grain Of Sand' on it so cannot be considered a total failure.

I'm sure there are several other bands out there who also made great debut albums, and then followed a similar downward career trajectory.

I love Squeeze. But their first album entitled Squeeze wasnt that great. That maybe due to John Cale as producer imposing his ideas rather than let the band get on with it. Also dont think much of "Sweets from a Stranger" 1982 or "Cosi Fan Tutti Fruity" 1985. Domino in 1998 is also very patchy.

I have just remembered Saint Etienne's Tales from Turnpike House, a concept album where the concept took over. Having said that Milk Bottle Symphony is brilliant and repeatedly played chez moi even today - but it's the only track from that album I do play which is hardly a success for a concept album. Wonder if Buzzer agrees?

Picking up on a few of the comments on this thread:
The Smiths didn't write a bad album. It might be the case that some (girls) are better than others, but is anyone seriously stating that TQiD, for instance, is 'truly appalling'.
In my view, the brilliance of Bowie up until 1980 can be contrasted with the dross that he's offered up since.
And, in a post in the first thread, I'd also like to forge a contrast between For Emma by Bon Iver and the steaming pile of doo that followed it.

Oasis.

Absolutely superb.
Much of the same brilliance.
WTF?
Deary me.
Why are you still in the music business?

I'm struggling to come up with a better example than Palookaville. I am a bit of a completist with bands that I like but I made the correct decision to sample the tracks first. I did eventually relent when I found it in a charity shop for 99p but have still only listened to it once.

When replacing my vinyl Pink Floyd collection with digital versions, I skipped the studio half of Ummagumma, and ended up with two copies of Momentary Lapse of Reason as it is so awful I blanked it from my mind.

I will nominate - Black Sabbath - Technical Ecstasy.

And another example - I had seen Angel Witch at least 10 times before they released their first album - what a disappointment (though I do have four copies of it - Vinyl, CD, remastered and anniversary edition).
