A friend of mine is planning a weekend in Lewes with his wife.

I know Brighton is on the doorstep - but any recommendations
for places to stay - things to do there and boozers, resetaurants
you'd recommend in good old Lewes?

He's a Rotherham supporter.

cheers

I think the Kings Head does rooms, White Hart hotel but that maybe a bit pricey. Plenty of good pubs in Lewes. Is Efes kebab still there for a late night bit of grub?

Pelham House is probably the nicest and of a similar price range to the others I think. As for Pubs- The Brewers, The Pelham and the Black Horse are all decent.

Anne of cleeves house is ok, the castle takes about 15 mins to walk round, do Harvey's do tours?

All I can think of, for a town with so much history it is limited, but then it's only small.

What do you do in Brighton in winter? Pavilion, lanes, then normal modern stuff, booth museum? Not exactly beach/seafront weather......

Hotels - Try Newick Park, not in Lewes but a great stay otherwise White Hart. Could give Shelleys a go, very good but expensive and I think there may now be a Hoogstraaten connection....?
Pubs - Lewes Arms, Elephant & Castle, Brewers Arms, Pelham Arms, Kings Head, Gardners Arms, Snowdrop, John Harvey Tavern, The Swan - tried them all on numerous occasions and all great real ale pubs and most do good food as well
Restaurants - Prezzo, Famiglia Lazzati, Pailin Thai, Chaula's, Spice Merchant, Shanaz - all good eateries and of course, Bill's
Cafes - Good non-chain places in Cliffe High St and Station St
To Do - Castle & Museum, Anne Of Cleves House, Priory ruins, Antique shops, Needlemakers shops, wander round the town for the variety of architecture from nearly 10 centuries, walk up to Lewes Golf course for great views or walk the Juggs Way to the Amex!

The walk around the railway nature reserve is quite a pleasant way to while away the time.

Harveys certainly used to do free tours but there was a waiting list about 2 years long. That was however back in the late 90s.

Entirely unrelated but we now have a Bill's in Guildford. That's lunch sorted on shopping days.
