After Harry's yet another Hove landmark has left us. The Chip Basket has closed to be replaced by a crappy chain business called FishAndChicken.

A sad day.

That's a shocker. One of the city's best chippies. Bankers will now have this side of town sewn up.

Assuming these places have closed because they've gone bust, it really must be tough out there for restaurant owners. It's hard to believe that places as popular as the Chip Basket and Harrys can no longer make a living. Add to that the rapid disappearance of The Meadow, which food wise was surely one of the best in Brighton and Hove. Azure would have lasted about three weeks in the real world!

I'm not sure what the reason is. I heard that the lease was up for renewal and the chain place were in a position to make a bigger offer; they own around 30-40 other places in the UK apparently so I presume they have the clout. Please note this is only local gossip.

I echo these sentiments. I live opposite and my housemates and I used to over eat in there, either we just didn't scoff enough or they've decided it's time to sell up and move on. Either way, a massive shame and a real loss for Church Road.

Went past it a week or so ago and thought it had suffered a fire and been gutted. Had not realised it had changed ownership. Another sad day.

There are a couple on Portland Road I use but would not rate them that highly. Bankers is probably the best for chips in town.

Sky high is very good, was a bit ropey when the old Chinese couple retired but can't fault it now

Tend to use Wings more than Sky high. May have to consider a change. My old time favourite was the one on Boundary Road which I think was called Athenas- or is that a card shop???

Where did that winking face come from at the end of my post. All I did was hit the question mark key a few times.
