Littlehampton - what is it like for a family day out?

Thinking of going somewhere different to our usual East Sussex day out coastal visit destinations.

Despite me thinking that it is a long way to go I have discovered that it is virtually the same distance away as a couple of other "day out" destinations for us - Dymchurch, or even Camber Sands if you go the long way round to avoid sitting in a traffic queue from Rye.

Has it got much of a beach, is the funfair worth visiting, any good chippies, etc? Sensible answers preferred, or quality silly ones. And I have heard the one that goes "Littlehampton, where the men die of shame"!

The only 2 good things about Littlehampton is a sit down chippy Oscars near the harbour as they call it, and the A259 out of it, provided the traffic keeps moving.

We like to take the kids over there now and again to go to the small fair, sit on the beach etc. Although the actual town centre is a bit tatty the seafront makes a nice change from under-developed Worthing.

When I was a kid Climping Sands used to be fantastic - sandy beaches and dunes.

All been washed away now unfortunately.

mainly pebble beaches, when the tide's out you'll have to walk half a mile to the sea, along the river you can go crabbing, or harbour park, there's also a big pond that you go on the swan dingi thingys, a couple of fish and chips shops down the road, never been in them though

Plenty to do there as a fun fair, crazy golf and the worlds longest bench no less.

Had many a good day out at Littlehampton

West Beach is far nicer than the more popular East Beach, and it's not as isolated as it once was because there's now a passenger 'ferry' which will take you across for £1 a person (I think).

Harbour Park with a variety of rides and amusements, 9 hole pitch and putt along the seafront, Mewsbrook Park which is pleasant and lots going on along the seafront and into the towns Harbour.

Freds fish and chips is well recommended whilst you sit on the harbour wall but there is also a good selection of small restaurants along Beach Road.

Avoid the town at all costs, full of Russians and Polish and on a downward spiral, however Rustington Village is far more pleasant and only a mile or so up the road.

Correct, but you need to be on the East Beach to keep the kids entertained.
