The devil that is alcohol

Dear All

I am not one who should preach on this subject however I wanted to warn predominately the younger members on this board about the dangers of alcohol that lie ahead. I have just learnt that I require a liver transplant due to my playing hard/working hard over the last 25 years.

As a youngster, I like you, thought I was invincible but this is a disease which doesn't warn you it's coming but arrives when it is ready if you drink long term. Within my work role part of my role was to entertain clients and given the choice between water or an alcoholic drink would by in large opt for the latter. My social network also involved meeting friends in pubs all the time (coffee shops were a no-no).

I seek no sympathy, in fact if and when one were to become available I have sought assurance that if someone on the waiting list requires a replacement through natural causes, then I want them to take the place in front of me. After all I did this to myself.

I have a few hard months in front of me and it's playing havoc with my head (I don't mind confessing to the fact that I'm bricking it as well), but I will beat this, as a Jocko, having bought a season ticket plan to make sure I get my years worth.

Sorry for dampening the mood at the end of the day, but even if one youngster heeds the above then it will have been worthwhile.

Yours

I'm 21 and I always laugh it off when I realise I'm probably drinking too much. I've started cutting down recently and doing exercise, the health and fitness benefits are noticeable immediately.

All the best with your road to recovery

From the age of 17 to 25 I was drinking ridiculous amounts. 3-4 times a week i was going out and getting absolutely wasted consistantly throughout this 8 year period.

Whilst i am fortunate enough to not suffer from liver damage like Jimbo i do suffer from chronic gastritis. This doesnt affect me day to day however when i do have a night on the sauce i do suffer with a lot of pain the following day.

Im not for a second suggesting this is anywhere near as serious as Jimbo's medical problem of course. Anyway i have had to change my lifestyle around a great deal as a result of this minor medical issue in comparison. Admittedly i still go out and get pissed however the regularity doesnt even come close to days gone by and i will not drink anything other than lager now. My days of ploughing through the vodka are well and truly over. I now eat more healthily, i go to the gym 3-4 times a week and 4 weeks ago quit smoking.

I have never had a drink problem i am just like most young men and women who drink to excess and dont realise the risks. A lack of education which im sure will now plague the NHS for years to come.

Brighton has one of the highest bills for alcoholic abuse in the country. Alcoholism does not discriminate between the social classes. It is an illness not a weakness. If anyone on NSC feels that they have a drinking problem I suggest that the call 0845 769 755. Good luck with your transplant.

Wise words Jimbo, and it's not only youngsters that can benefit, us old 'uns too sometimes need reminding of the damage we are doing ourselves. Best of luck with your treatment, I hope you get the transplant you need.

Thanks for your kind words guys, much appreciated. As I mentioned in my previous post I put myself in this position and its down to myself to dig my way out of it with the help of the wonderful team of medics from my GP up to my Consultant. Dougal, your comment hit the nail on the head exactly and its not until you have to abstain, you realise it's everywhere particularly on tv soaps and adverts in newspapers by the supermarkets offering it cheaper than water.

Have a good day all

So, you start by explaining your long-term drink problem, and end by saying you "never had a drink problem".

The sad thing is that people see "getting absolutely wasted" as "normal", because "most young men and women" also do it.

To be fair though, we do get mixed messages about this - I feel "normal" because I DON'T do the above, but I still drink regularly enough to be well above the weekly limit.

Good luck to Jimbo, and let's hope he makes a few of us think about it...

I echo that. Unfortunately two of our Town Councillors here in Seaford don't. as a result both of them have been humiliated in the local media, and now "Private Eye" as well.

I'm amazed that the wife of one of them has complained in the "Argus" was "shopped" on a drunk-driving charge. I never knew anybody who stopped police officers in his or her car, to tell them he was unfit to drive through alcohol.

That's why it is a criminal offence.
