Did he go quite a while before he scored at home ? I also thought for a striker he had no pace, infact he seemed to run oddly !

Not really he scored after 10 minutes on his home debut.

Ted has always loved his squash. Very good player too - him and his brother Martin.

I played with both of them for the Sunday League footy team based at Corals. Our home pitch, at the Greyhound Stadium, was RIDICULOUSY good, by Sunday League standards!

Ha.

This.

When did you play? For me it was about 88-90, with Maybank x 2, Paul Flood, Sammy Nelson, Sammy Donnolly, etc.

I played during 1990 infrequently when they were short, above were losing interest by then and we were short quite often. Did you play in the game when we had all eleven either booked or sent off?

Not that I recall, although Ted and Martin, in particular tended to have disciplinary issues, fairly regularly!

I was only 17-18 so I used to get BULLIED into going in goal, and then SHOUTED AT when I let ANYTHING in!

I was a left back so was probably doing the shouting

Left back in my time, was generally Sammy Nelson or me.

I remember getting PISSED OFF, when I was overlooked for selection, in favour of the guy who had 80 international caps, and had played about 400 times for Arsenal! :dunce:

I saw his overhead kick at The Goldstone. It would have been the greatest goal in the history of the universe, had it actually gone in. Apart from that contribution he reminded me of Frank Spencer without the raincoat. He represents the greatest transfer rip off that we've ever been subjected to IMHO.

I think he was unlucky as he never had an understanding with Peter Ward and that meant many didn't like him. If we had signed him now, there would be numerous threads about flair and the like.

Thought he went to Holland but got a knee injury which ended his career but he made enough from that contract.

Forgot to add that he is in our record books as the scorer of our first ever goal in the top flight, away to Villa, a game we were unlucky to lose.

I remember him mucking about on a kids skateboard at Brighton station prior to boarding the Seagull Special for the first away game of the season, (I think 78). All of a sudden you heard the shout, "Maybank, get off that f***ing skateboard". That was Alan Mullery.
I think it was Wrexham away & I'm sure it was the first game, but might be wrong.
(Loved the Seagull Special).

Teddy Maybank + a mate sanded the wooden floors in my house a few years ago.

A very decent guy - but said he was treated badly by the club.

Mullery transfered him to Holland, complete with a dodgy knee.

Had it regularly pumped full of cortisone, just to recoup their fee.

Got the impresion he'd rather have vodka than semi-skimmed on his conflakes in the morning.

Good bloke, didn`t quite fullfil his potential as a player for us.I used to sit near his Dad in the old West stand on matchdays,he was a lovely fella.I still see Ted occasionally, think he lives near dogs stadium and repairs sports facilities.

Ted was Brightons record signing at the time. From Chelsea I think.
Rumour was it was all off the back of his dad being a bit of a Gangster who Mullers liked to keep in with at the time.Obviously before Mullers found God and became a "Born again Christian".
Ted ended up at Whitehawk, along with Gary Williams, before the authorities realised that Ted had been given a massive pay out by his insurers because he had said that a knee injury meant that he couldn't play any more.He had to stop playing.Ted then turned to Squash (The sport not the drink, naturally).Much gentler on the knees....NOT.I liked Ted.Some found him flash, but it was mostly a front.
