What I find interesting / depressing about that Top 30 box- office takings list is that out of the 30 films listed, 20 of them are part of a film franchise (ie a sequel or a film that spawned sequels).

Also, other than Forrest Gump and the 6th Sense (and possibly The Da Vinci Code, which I havnt seen), ALL of those films are either completely or heavily reliant on CGI.

There are far too many people that want to be entertained without having to think deeply about the film or spot a certain undertone. They want graphics, loud and brash entertainment and big named stars. There are only a few in there that I would want to see again or truly felt that the film was deserving of my entrance fee or attention. I rarely go to the cinema and watch films when they are on TV or come out on DVD so I am pleased to say that I have not contributed to many those misleading figures.

That list means next to nothing of quality, possibly more to do with marketing and the name(s).

I see what you are saying, And I agree but after a long week at work (or NSC) the last thing you want to do on a friday night is have to think about a film beyond what is happening on screen is it?

I like all sorts of films, but I do wonder if I had not gone and seen films like Zodiac on a friday I would have enjoyed it more?

Very true. I try and watch a variety of genre, but it was aimed at portion of society that sticks to mainstream cinema.

Finally watched Casino Royale last night.

It was okay but some scenes were too long and others, that probably needed a bit more explanation, were too short.

I liked the fact that it was a bit darker than other Bonds have been though and it looked a bit more stylish.

I rate it at 67%

Hither (sometimes Thither)
I had 30 Days of Night on Friday arvo. Admittedly, the acceptance of a chronologically jumbled narrative has to remain in place as bloody thunder erupts, but i quite enjoyed it graphically. Necks been bitten or hacked, men becoming angry or crazed, a battle betwixt honour and dark necessity lurking permanently within, pretty women.
If you like comics and horrorific scenes, like i do and did, then it might be worth a squinty look.

American Gangster - very very very good.

Denzel and Russel are both very cool. Watch out for Russell's CRISP sandwich.

Running Scared.

Rented having wanted to get it out for a while. Thought it was gonna be a tight little noir but instead it was a baggy reimagining of fairy tales as a thriller. Interesting idea and it looked really nice but didn't really work.

0.53287 out of 1.

Ratatoiulle- very good but not as great as Pixar's previous, an injury-prone Woodgate
The Iron Giant- very nice and well made with a nice finish, Michael Owen
Groundhog Day- superb, you forget just how entertaining and brilliant it is, Peter Beardsley
King Kong-overlong and over-rated with the occasional glimpse of promise, but all adds up to nothing,Jermain Defoe

Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix

I managed to hire this out as the other half likes these films. I saw the last one at the cinema and was underwhelmed so I did not expect to much and I have to say I was very pleasantly suprised.

It was the best Potter film I have seen by some considerable margin with a decent story and some excellent effects with a host of good actors and lots of jiggary pokeary going on. It keept me interested fot the whole 125 minutes which was about the right length.

It was not as good as Transformers but a decent film which is no 2 in my 2007 blockbusters list of the films I have seen 8.1

Transformers 8.8
Harry Potter 8.1
Pirates 7.3
Die Hard 6.5
