We couldn't get near the train let alone get on it.
All reservations have been declassified and the 10 30 was a free for all.
Delay repay is very slow, I think the whole train is claiming.
Delay Repay! - after my awful journey back to Cumbria after the Sheffield cup match (where I got home after may of you got back to Brighton) - I put in a delay repay. Northern said 'not out fault guv' - even though it was their trains that were cancelled, and their bus replacement services that didn't turn up - and passed it onto Trans Pennine Express. So, I appealed Northern's decision, and they rejected it again. TPE then said they would send me a 50% refund (the return leg)

So I went back to Northern and said 'fair enough - but can you tell me why it is TPE that have to pay out for your poor service'?

They didn't answer my question. But just informed me that I was even later getting home than I actually was, and would therefore be getting 100% refund from them.

So - I've ended up with 150% refund.

No wonder the railways are in a mess - they waste half their resources bickering about who was responsible.

Absolute car crash, the entire system buckling under the pressure of one line being closed, at some someone is going to wake up and realise we need longer trains and more services, but the only people who can invest in it to increase that are asleep at the wheel.

If you got a reservation on one train it won't transfer to the next as that is likely to already have a reservation on the seat!!
Obviously. My point was about the original reservation on the 09:30. Seems absurd they wouldn’t let you on a train with a reservation.

Firstly, it wasn't quite obvious as the OP stated he was on a different train. That said, the organisation at St Pancras was useless. On Saturday we were being told to queue for the 17:02 behind people that were queuing for the 17:30. Because I complained we were able to go to the front and get on our train with our reserved seats but it was ridiculous that the train left a couple of minutes late and our carriage was about a third full.

This was our thoughts, I think it was a 6 or 7 car train. Knowing the trains were going to be overcrowded surely they should have increased the train to 10 / 12 carriages.
On our return to St Pancras it looked no better to queue was massive.
Going up a young lady in the queue had a panic attack and tried to jump over the top, we managed to pull her back and calm her down. It was all quite scary to be honest.
Customer safety should be paramount, I hope she is OK.

They also need to stop pricing people off the trains. Trying to get to a train to Milton Keynes and back, just 120 miles away by 8.30am, would cost me £117.40 even booking 5 weeks in advance - 50p a mile pretty much. A Hummer, one of the most environmentally unfriendly cars it's possible to buy, gets through petrol at a rate of 54p per mile at current prices - how on earth is public transport almost the same price as driving using a car made for people with money to burn?

It'd be cheaper for me to pay for my colleague to travel to his local airport, me to mine, and both fly to Barcelona and have the meeting there...so instead I'm driving to Milton Keynes (not in a Hummer) which I really, really don't want to do but it's so much cheaper and I just can't spend the money on a train that I can't even be confident will get me there on time regardless of whether or not there's industrial action. If I knew I could rely on it then I might swallow the extortionate price for the convenience, but for some things being late isn't compensated for enough by Delay Repay.

We drove to the game so I’m only looking at this thread out if curiosity. Seems odd that people are surprised the trains are packed coming away from a PL football match with a sell out away crowd on a Sunday. Some of our group who did catch the train just went back to the pub and returned after a pint and got seats on a later train.

You really think it will change under Any government, nothing will Ever change until we get a leader who is not frightened to make decisions , there are too many opposing factions in this country with different agendas

Why go by train? OK, it means you can have a beer or two, but if your standing up for a few hours crammed onto a train is it all worth it.
I drove to Sheffield. Left at 7:45 and home at 21:00 with a delay on the M1 southbound. Cost was about £85 including parking which, when split, is the cheapest way.
Seagull Travel I think was £55 and a guaranteed seat.
So what is it with the train that everyone wants to do it?

Not going to defend the railway operators but you are travelling at peak hours. Ticket to Sheffield was £56.70 return (did include senior rail card). If it's possible, why not organize the meeting for later in the day?
Unfortunately it's not possible, but the amount of resentment I feel for the operators penalising people who work "normal" hours is off the scale.

For me it's a combination of social and freedom.

Going by car there's a maximum of four of you with two adults squashed in the back, the driver can't drink and must stay alert or have a back up driver who also can't drink (Sheffield would have been, what, 8 hours driving from Brighton?). You've got to go on the motorway and are stuck the second there's a jam.

On the train I can go with a group of mates, pick where I want to drink, have as much or as little beer as I feel like and meet new people by getting talking to other Brighton fans on the same train.

In the past it's always been ok. A combination of stupid pricing (hello LNER), under investment, strikes and badly timed engineering work have made it an absolute nightmare this season. When I first started going to Albion away games in the late 80s Nottingham and South Yorkshire were two of the easiest trips with regular, quick trains from St Pancras. This season they've been the worst.

Yesterday I watched on telly, something I'd vastly prefer to eight hours in a car or coach.
