I'd be inclined to drop him when Webster is fit. Some of the pace seems to have gone, sadly

I’m sorry but your wrong.

He is being asked to play differently

When he has played as a RWB he has showed he is just as quick as he was …. West Ham and Leicester away both spring to mind when he went past players like they were standing still.

Quite impressive really that I'm wrong, yet the two examples of him having a good game which you've mentioned are ones where he's come off the bench.

So are you agreeing with me? [emoji3]

Way out West
He needs to play in a back 5 (or 3) to get the most out of him. He just can't get forward in the same way when there's only Dunk and Veltman back. With Webster fit again, hopefully it gives Potter the chance to revert to 3 centre backs, and Veltman can cover the right side when Tariq goes forward. The disruptions to the centre backs this season have been the main reason (imho) that we haven't done better. Players like TAA and Reece James can go forward at will, virtually, as they have world class defenders behind them. Plus, TAA gets superb support from Salah and Henderson.

Definitely. I don’t understand people saying that his pace has gone after having seen him leave opposition left backs for dead this season. Games I was thinking of were Liverpool (away), Leeds and Man Utd. Against Leeds his opposite man was ruined and subbed off at half time (already on a yellow) and in half an hour against Man Utd, Luke Shaw was really lucky to only be booked once.

Coaching skills out of someone is not possible, its is a hundred percent impossible. You cant coach someone who could swim to no longer be able to swim, someone who can drive to no longer be able to drive, someone who can ride a bicycle cant be untaught how to ride it.

Thought he was good today and think he has been in most of the games but he is not back to where he was before his injury, and may never be.

As far as stopping, turning around, and passing back, yes, you obviously can coach someone out of doing something else. Potter Fanboy or not, objective enough to see it or not, it is obviously happening.

As I said, you cant coach skills out of someone but you can coach them into making other decisions.

He was picked for the England u21s last week, he’s the youngest regular player in Albions team - he’s only 21 and in an established premier league team playing every week and he’s having a decent first full season after a long injury.
And this year he’s had a few brilliant games. some decent games and sone quiet games partly because Albions defence has not been very settled and our form has been so inconsistent. And partly because I guess he’s still finding his feet.
This thread though with the OP and others hinting that there’s something wrong, or that he’s lost it.
And that he’s completely lost form or speed and perhaps Potter has coached something out of him is yet again for NSC perhaps a bit of an exaggeration…

No

He doesn’t need dropping … he needs playing in the correct position

And as for the lost his pace comment, he is still as quick when he is allowed to get forward ideally in a RWB role.

How many times has he beaten his man confidently though?

Compare this to last season when he could do it several times a game. It's like it's an extraordinary effort to do it these days which makes it so rare.

Of course, he's still quicker than some full backs. But doesn't appear to be the quickest player in the league anymore.

You're possibly right that he isn't as quick this season. However he's still quick enough to merit a starting position in our team, and that's after having returned from a long-term injury about 3 months into the season with the coaching staff being very careful with his comeback. I'd be surprised if a summer of conditioning under controlled non-competitive conditions doesn't give him a boost in pace. He's still only 21 so still probably a year or two off reaching his physical peak.

For those who watched, how did Lamptey perform in the Newcastle friendly?

His injury should be behind him now. Will need to get match sharp, but really feels like a make or break season for him to stay at this level.

It seems like RDZ is putting faith in him for the season, but feels like he'll need to find his early form to keep a spot in the quality lineup we have these days...
