Surprised at the tone of the Vickery interview, he seems to have a huge downer on Enciso, giving much more than a cautious warning that its obviously a risk, he was to my mind basically saying he is another Billy Arce. Given that Brighton have been attempting this deal for sometime, we must have had tabs on him for several years and therefore the scouting team would by now have a much better idea of what he is capable of , and they must think he is worth the risk.

He may not be as ready as Caceiado was, but he is a couple years younger and is full international and has a good goal scoring record. AFAIK no one is suggesting that he will be straight into the first team, at 18 he is very much "one for the future". Brighton have developed a track record of buying players and then loaning then for a season or more before they are considered for the first team squad (MacAllister, Caceiado, Undav, Mitoma, Moder plus others). I see nothing to suggest this is any different,

I think that this may be one of those times where the club are taking a calculated risk, but one that could reap massive rewards in a couple of years time. I recall conversations about MacAllister and whether he would ever even get to England, let alone be a mainstay in the team. That turned out pretty well

Tim Vickery obviously knows his cebollas when it comes to South American football but he's not going to have access to the data that our scouting network does.

Neither do we!

Vickery is by a country mile the best (only) reference point we have for the lad.

It might not be as honed as our South American scout(s) but it's not going to be far off.
If TV says 'calm down' we all need to calm down.

Moisesesque talent doesn't just keep turning up.
We also need to remember that overnight sensation was a year in the making.

I hope he comes, the club obviously wants him, but if Vickery says he's one for the future, possibly, anybody else would be a fool to say otherwise.

I think we can work out what is going to happen here.

Naylor has just written about options and how they are often kept secret.

Enciso wants 4 years, albion 5.

There will be a 4 year contract with 1 year TOP SECRET option.

Some of NSC will explode in rage when a 4 year deal is announced.

He's a skinny 18 year-old being plucked from the Paraguayan league. Of course he's one for the future.

But you can bet we're not prepared to spunk 10 million quid on him having only watched him a handful of times. Extensive homework will have been done.

Yeah deffo, I'm not saying it hasn't.

What I'm saying is Vickery is the only reference point we have, so needs to be listened too.

I wonder if the length contract 'issue', is them wanting to stop the Albion sending him to Belgium/Boca for a year.
Trying to see if they can move their boy up the pecking order, by narrowing his availability.
It seems rather odd and unlikely to move the club off its tried and tested formula.

I love Vickery, he is one of the best and most knowledgeable/entertaining football experts out there. But he did also say that Phillipe Coutinho wouldn't be a success in England before he joined Liverpool so as he himself says, he is by no means always right about the South American signings.

He makes some good points and he knows a lot more about Encisco than the rest of us but ultimately no one knows how a kid is going to settle in a new country/continent or how any transfer is going to work out really, this one could be great or a flop. But our success with Caicedo and Mac Allister should give us confidence that we know how to get to the best of them so fingers crossed it works out.

I had a discussion with a proper dinosaur recently who, in the same breath of praising people non ex-players like Vickery and co (who I like) at the same time criticised female pundits on male games as they've not played at the same level so 'can't possibly relate to what they are talking about'

He couldn't see the issue with his comments.

Michael Owen wasn’t much bigger was he? I have no idea whether he will play straight away but some players can be brilliant at that age.

Michael Owen didn't arrive from Paraguay and before you say it, neither did Rooney ?

And it is easy tracable since pretty much whatever Naylor says, someone else (with real connections and inside knowledge) said it before him. In this case Libertad club president Di Tore who said that the contract will be between four and five years.

You know that's how journalism works most of the time, right? I know you can't stand him or anyone else who does that job and you'd probably say is stealing a living, but he is the one with the connections to people who have the inside knowledge. I happen to think he's pretty good at it – insomuch as he doesn't spout baseless rumours for clicks all day long, he'll wait until he gets official confirmation or will report what the club/contact has told him.

Agreed. Naylor is extremely reliable.

I think we have to remember, that it is not Enciso's dream to play for Brighton.

I am sure he will be seeing us as a stepping stone, hence why he wants a 4-year contract.

After listening to Tim Vickery, I think it's a bit too early for an eighteen year old with great potential to be looking at a team that finished ninth in the greatest league in the world as a stepping stone. He needs to bust a gut to prove himself worthy of a place in our side.

Naylor isn’t going to go and sleuth out some breaking news exclusive. When it comes to that kind of journalism he’s not great. However when he nails his colours to the mast he’s right 99.9% of the time. It’s easy to shrug him off but he’s basically a Brighton-only Fabrizio Romano. An incredibly consistent tap-in merchant. If he says yes or no to a rumour then that’s what’s happening.

However Swansman had decided that the knowledge Naylor had is one of those things he knows more about than actual Brighton fans. See also: anyone knowing someone who knows Connolly. You could show him photographic proof of a source from within the club talking to Naylor and he’d still think he knows best.

Not unreasonable for him to take two seasons to become established in the squad, then a break-through season at which point - with a four year contract - if he's going to be good, we're either forced to cash in because he only has a year left on his contract, or take the final year of the deal and let him walk (as so many players do now). Five years gives us far more room for him to develop, and for us to get the benefits of having helped him mature AND have the opportunity to cash in on that development.

Feels to me like there is a really big difference between 4 and 5 years for a player this young and you can see whay both sides might be pushing hard for their preferred option in the agreement.

Yes, I can see the arguement for a five year deal. What I can't see is Enciso's (or his advisors) reason for holding out for a four year deal. Yes, of course he will be wanting to use Brighton as a stepping stone to the top 6, the Champions League and all that footballers' Nirvana - but how will a five year contract hold him back? In the unlikely event that in four year's time he'll become a free agent with Real, Barca, PSG and Citeh all queueing up in a competition to offer him the biggest ever signing-on fee, yes, it might be - but that isn't a given, whatever they like to think - and if we get to sell him in four years for fifty-sixty-seventy million plus, he ain't exactly going to be a pauper! And at 22 he could still stay with us for another year for a paltrey million or two before hitting the big, BIG time at 23. That five year offer isn't exactly exploitation, is it.............

Compromise has been suggested of a four year deal with an option (for the club) of an extra year - if his advisors take that, they're fools; if he flops, they'll lose out on a whole year's PL salary .........

It appears that the attacking winger/AM role is up for grabs with Trossard, Khadra, Sarmiento and Mitoma plus Enciso with Maupay and Undav available to play a deeper role. In essence, we’ll be loaning out or selling at least 3 of the above.

And if he doesn’t flop he’ll potentially lose out on even more. Or we deal with his development poorly and he feels he needs to get out. Or he just doesn’t quite make the grade and he’s stuck in a country he doesn’t want to be in for an extra year. It’s a standard negotiation. We aren’t going to be his only option realistically so why shouldn’t he and his team negotiate for what they feel best? The rest of us certainly do when changing jobs.
