You have clearly misunderstood the term "career politician."
Career politicians tend to leave University, get a job as an advisor and try to get on a list. On the Labour side that could alternatively be via a Union role.
The current administration are packed with people who have worked in the "real world", but their world is one of high paid jobs in journalism, banking or the legal profession.
I'd much prefer career politicians (with all their faults) than this lot.
It's quite simple Mr Harty, the Government are led by people who aren't very nice people and it starts at the top.
Anyone defending them has confused morality and standards in public life with political ideology.

Since the tide has far from turned I have been pondering how his supporters (and he himself) square the circle. Ok bear with me.....
Imagine you think, with a degree of evidence, that you are the best person to lead the country.
You see that job as your destiny and what you were born for.
It occupies all your waking hours.
You understand that disruptive change is the stuff of winning.
In a crisis, then, you can't muck about.
You select the people you think will do the job - the job you want done.
You work had and you play hard.
Playing hard is necessary to keep you sharp, ready, and engaged.
Your job and youir arrangements are critically important, therefore.
It is your duty to do what is necessary, not tip toe around the rules set for others.
This means, by definition, you must do as you like. It would be irresponsible to do otherwise.
I think this may be how he sees it and how his supporters see it.
If he is caught, and people are angry, he is sincerely sorry for the anger and upset caused.
But not for what he did. Which was right, by definition.
Is there a medical term to describe someone who thinks they have not only a right but a responsibility to act like a god, I wonder?
For some, it seams that words is simply 'leader'.

Boris won by a landslide if there was a general election tomorrow he'd probably win by a slightly reduced landslide, if the oppositions domestic and foreign policys are focused entirely on a slice of birthday cake, if left wing social media is in overdrive encouraging supporters to write to their nearest Conservative MP to complain about nothing else but a slice of birthday cake you know that they have absolutely nothing to offer except expressing anger and the horror of a slice of birthday cake

Quite. They see being in government as just like being in another corporation. Boiled down to the basic ethos of “make as much money as you can for as long as you can and then get out”.
As long as Government Plc is making money for Johnson and his chums, they ain’t going anywhere. Reputation doesn’t mean anything to them. They don’t need to maintain good reputations like the working man does, they have connections and they have “get out of jail” money.

Pretty harsh, and with little foundation.
There are working class Tories and then there are thick working class Tories. Writing a five line sentence / paragraph, with punctuation a 13 year old would be ashamed of and without any concept of why people get criminal fines, puts him in the latter.
Obviously those with endless cultural references who can spell the names of actual pianists are probably in group one.

If the Conservatives thought they had a cat's chance in hell of winning an election tomorrow they'd ask Parliament for one.
Johnson is finished. The only reason the internal party are holding back is the current crop are so bad, they are frightened that a replacement would be worse.
The only successor was Sunak, but he has royally ****ed that up.

If its that clear cut then I guess that you'd have no trouble meeting someone bereaved during the period, and unable to be with their loved one because the same people lashing it up on suitcases full of smuggled wine told them that it wasn't safe, and telling them that they're just upset over a slice of cake.

Indeed. It's very obvious that it's probable.
But to be definite the person would probably also have to be able to go five minutes without defending the new far right.

I haven't been to a fancy dress party since my sixth form and undergraduate days - and that's a long time ago - but SS uniforms were not unusual at such occasions back then.

Never tried to get hold of one personally. I suspect posh Tory boys got their fancy dress from theatrical costumiers, rather than Ritz Party Hire, still, I see he has resigned now, this might catch on.
