when they say a job i applied for is being 'put on hold'..
either a firm needs staff, or they dont? if they dont think i'm suitable, i rather they said so, up front, rather than keep me hanging on..
a few other (direct) applications made anyway, so stuff the lot of 'em!
rant over.

Maybe they need the headcount but don't have the budget til the new year.

What sort of thing are you looking for DS?
Might give us a clue if we know what your preferred line of work would be.
They may be banking on a new contract before they can commit to new staff.
Seems fairly obvious to me.
They haven't yet decided if they need to appoint someone, but think they probably will at some point. Thus, there's no point in pressing on at the moment, but they may do at some time in the future.
In the meantime, obviously you need to continue hunting elsewhere, and if you're fixed up when they decide that they now want to fill the post it's their loss and they'll have to start from scratch again.
It's frustrating from both sides. I know this having been the person trying to bolster my team in the past only for senior management to procrastinate for ages, losing all the best candidates who had applied. After the third attempt at recruiting someone had been delayed, I left!
Oh, and it's not the agency's fault that their client decides to put the recruitment on hold. It actually costs them money too, so direct your angst elsewhere.
No, this is largely a scam by agencies to get more CVs in and generally raise their profile. They frequently advertise jobs that don't necessarily exist.

I'll fill you in on job agency speak:
Hello = I'm a total and absolute fuzzywuzzyfuzzywuzzyfuzzywuzzy fuzzywuzzy intent on ripping you off
Goodbye = I've made all I can from you and now you are worthless to me so I've no further need for you, you may as well cease to exist.
Hope this helps

Source? Let me guess, you don't have one. It's just another unnecessary, unfounded dig at the recruitment industry.
If I put job on hold it's because the client has decided not to proceed. This can happen for a multitude of reasons. The company may not have approved headcount or have had headcount stalled. They may have budgetary issues. They may have just reconsidered the importance of the role.
The implication of a role being put on hold is that it will be available at some time in the future, as opposed to a closed role which has been filled or scrapped totally.
Desperate Fan - You really are beginning to rile me with your ill founded, stupid and somewhat ridiculous and ill informed digs at the recruitment industry. I understand that you are frustrated and need work, but perhaps you need to look at yourself, the types of roles you are applying for, your interview technique, your CV (and no, I am not doing that again), your presentation etc.

But job agencies are generally useless !!! I've used them to find jobs for myself and they rarely have the politeness to get back to you.
I'm currently interviewing for my tream and our company policy is to use agencies. The agencies seem incapable of sending candiates with the correct skill set ( and yes it has been made clear what we want ), they hack the CV's around and make them barely unreadable. It would help if they actually proof read what they send us !!!
I personally rate job agencies along side estate agents !

That's it. I've fucking had enough of this shit on here. I've dedicated so much time defending my industry to unwarranted, pointless and uninformed threads full of bigotry and generalisations started by the likes of Desperate Fan. I just cannot be bothered anymore.
It gets me so fucking angry that people like you are so happy to judge and generaslise and point the finger. You can have your pointless little rants. If you want my informed response you can check all the other answers I've given on the other "recruitment consultants are all wankers" threads. In fact, why not just bounce the one that Desperate Fan started three weeks ago rather than go through the motions all over again?
Oh and by the way, I am sick and tired of reading posts that are not proof read. What exactly is a "tream"?

My husband was just part of a 'sting' on three well known high street job agencies and one independent. He complained because of the way the agency was treating applicants for jobs at his company and they did a whole undercover thing with the DTI. One is in a lot of trouble. Ahem. Disgusting. Evil. Corrupt. Callous. Oiks.

We've been here before and I don't have the time to go through it again. I shut you up about a year ago. We had a lovely long debate that ended with silence from you - do a search.
I liked the contractor thread a week or so ago - a taste of your own, bitter medicine! Contractors and contract recruitment consultants - what a happy relationship that is! (PS - I do perm x)

I have literally just got another job thru an agency. I handed my notice in on Monday and I start the new one in Jan.
The agency were professional and curtious, never gave me anything less than the truth, put my CV to the right people and followed up each request for information I had. I in turn was honest with them and stayed in regular contact and generally did everything they asked of me.
If you are dissatisfied with your agency use another one. If you want to get a job then treat everyone you come in to contact with at the same professional level you would want to be treated yourself. Two business basics frankly.

Shut me up ? No, in your your own mind maybe. Mind you having a thick skin added to manifest ignorance is very much in keeping for a 'Recruitment Consultant'. I suppose you 'sold' double glazing before this.
As you can see the vast majority of people on this thread have the same low opinion of your profession, maybe you could become a pimp.

I have no experience of "general" recruitment agencies, but have positive experience with specialists (in my case Healthcare Industry).
Main thing to remember is that whilst recruiters like to call themselves "consultants" in effect they are sales people to whom you are a saleable commodity. You don't get a job...they get no commish. They, like all Sales People, would prefer that you are as easy to sell as possible, after all everyone likes an easy life!
They are not in it to be alturistic and will try where possible to put you in front of the best opportunity for your skills. The worst ones just go "scattergun" and send every spanner and drongo along in the hope that one gets lucky...kinda like spermatozoa!
I think the flounce we all witnessed a while ago is a little over-dramatic because..what does he think he is?... some sort of "Employment Angel" bestriding the earth righting wrongs and feeding the needy.
You are a Sales Rep mate. nothing more or less, live with it.

I'm glad you dislike people not proof reading what they send you. Read what you've written there and see if it makes sense. What does a "barely unreadable" CV look like? I assume it's actually quite readable, or does it take it the other way?
And I think you'll find that most estate agents are very professional, too.
Like all industries, including the one you work in no doubt, there will be people who are crap at their job and will piss people off with their unprofessional attitude and actions. Just move on to someone else if it happens to you and don't tar everyone with the same brush, you bloody knuckle dragging hooligan football fan!
And no, I am not a recruitment consultant or an estate agent. I do, however, find it funny that all these people who rant about those professions are very coy when asked what they do themselves. ???

In the ideal world they shouldn't have that opinion though. If it all works out then you get a job / a better job and the recruitment consultant gets the commission and the new employer gets a good new resource. The only one who loses is the old employer, if there is one but by the time someone's gone to an agency or said yes to a headhunter they're already thinking of leaving.

I am currently actively working with six clients.
1. I worked with them in Oz - When I came back three and a half years ago they recommended me personally to their Clapham office. I have placed 10 permenent people there this year - all of whom are still there
2. A company I was given three and a half years ago and have turned them into a one deal a year client to a six deal a year client through understanding their needs.
3. A start up in London. I recruited for their Operations Director in his previous job and he called me as soon as he had a vacancy in his new job.
4. An company I have three years history with. They are considering outsourcing all of their work to me next year.
5. A major bank. I am working with a new office after being referred internally.
6. Another bank who are working with me because they are impressed by my client list and understanding of their work - I sent them 8 CV's, they interviewed 7.
Look, you're acting like a little child. You know NOTHING about me, yet you call me a pimp, a sewer rat and a leper. How dare you! Is that the way a 50 year old man is meant to behave. You should take a long hard look at yourself before pointing your bigoted finger at everyone else.

Oh for gods sake you lot, I've had the pleasure of working with quite a few recruitment agencies in my time, both in Canary Wharf and in Worthing.
The problems are as follows: there are many agencies out there who employ their consultants and have them meet quotas. These are the ones who will send as many peoples CV's to a prospective job as possible, frankly very annoying....There are also some excellent agencies out there who match potential candidates with the qualities requested by the employer and pass on good interviewees....these agencies got my repeat custom.
The other problem is that there is only a certain amount of people available, sadly the pool of good candidates in West Sussex is smaller than in London, so often agencies have slimmer pickings so to speak....
There are good agencies and there are ones I just don't use for the above reasons...
I'm looking for specific work now, and there are only 2 agencies in Brighton I'll use to find me a role, basically for the reasons above...

JS, You are obviously in a fairly niche exec area recruiting white collar roles, and I guess that you are probably placing people in the 35-50k bracket, and probably realising 10% of the first yars salary as commission.
It is a Sales Role you are in..it's not something to be ashamed of, and I think you are overly sensitive by trying to claim you are some sort of Saint who doesn't get rewarded for finding talented people and matching them with an employer.
Your Clients need to fill a role.
You have filtered applicants which saves them time.
You put forward candidates for hire.
If successful you recieve commish.
Perfectly honourable. I expect the other posters on here are dealing with "consultants" in more general sectors, which no doubt, you would be the first to distance yourself from and would probably object to them calling themselves that.

I work in a niche market - graduate recruitment. Did the whole white collar stuff in the past and enjoyed it, but I love the grad sector - I get to work with lots of young people and give them lots of advice throught the process. I have great clients too.
Grad rec is good because I can really add value and help them get a great job and start a career. It's not as cut throat as some sectors and I enjoy that.
Yep, make plenty of commision. I work a 47 hour week minimum, 54 hours last week. Target driven environment, all the usual pressures of sales - I work harder than all my mates - believe me, I earn it. I certainly don't feel like a saint but I am not dishonourable either.
However, what I cannot stand is the assumptions that people make about me and others in my profession who do a bloody good job and that's why I get touchy about it. It's bigotry, plain and simple and I've already been there before. I accept that there are people who don't hold the same values as me in recruitment. That's the same whatever you do - there are footballers like Leon Knight and there are footballers like Adam Virgo. I just don't want to be tarred with the same brush.

As with every industry, you are bound to have good AND bad experiences. The bad experiences are more likely to stand out.
In my experience, recruitment consultants will help you, if you help yourself. They can't just give you a job! Pin them down and ask if the job is currently available and keep on harassing them!

Frankly this is such a silly thread. Anyone who thinks that all recruitment agencies are bad is off their rocker. As in any industry there are good ones and bad ones... if they were alll bad no one would use them... no good company wastes its money on a bad recruitment agaency... I know I used recruitment agencies for five years and there were many who got the sharp end of my tongue... but there were also ones who went the extra mile to get me the person I really needed.
But JS don't take it personally. Before and since working in the publishing industry I've been in education everyone slags off teachers.... teachers spend their whole lives trying to make things better for others and receive next to no reward and find most decisions in education being taken by people who know nothing about education... consider yourself lucky before taking every criticism personally.

Ive been a consultant for 4 years, never had any complaints or problems and dont treat my staff of clients like shit. The candidates are the most important people to an agency as without them we are nothing, add to this recruitment is fukin hard work, I was in at 6.45 this morning and will be here till gone five.
Just because you have a bad experience with them doent mean we are all cnuts. I had a dodgy curry once in Tunbridge Wells, doesnt mean they are all shit.

p.s... my thinking is, a company would only use an agency if there was a job to fill, and the cost etc had already been signed off..
although just had a call from a separate agency, with possibility of some temp work up to xmas (and beyond..?) will see how that goes, too.
what doesnt help is not getting any reply, as need proof of what i have looked for, to show the job centre..
something will come.. i can feel it in me bones...
re agency commissions, i once worked at a firm and saw some of their invoices.. 15-20% commission seemed to be the 'norm'.. not bad for a few phone calls?

What a magnificent thread - it's got it all. Everything from agency whinges (I dislike agents as well I'm afraid) to bhaexpress losing his sad old rag as usual with the usual tirade of abuse he wouldn't dare say in public. What an absolute gimp.
JS,
I can't say I'm a fan of agencies in general, but in your defence, I can say that among recruitment agents I have come across a massive variation in the quality of service. Most of them are terrible. They bother you with ill-suiting jobs, they don't usually know what they're trying to sell (i.e. what the requirements actually mean), they invariably submit your CV but don't bother contacting you if your CV has been rejected by their client. By and large, recruitment agents offer a shit service in my experience. And to prove the point, I've been with the same agent for a decade - not because I am biased towards them, it's just that they do seem to get the job done ahead of most of the other agencies! Ergo, most other agencies can't compete because they're crap!
To be honest, why should I have respect for any service industry that isn't properly regulated? And why, 3 years down the line, do they still get paid 8% of my rate by my employer? As an agent, what possible value are you adding to justify that? In fact, all you do is add another layer of risk to me not being paid!
It seems to me that those who are bad-mouthing recruitment agencies come across as the sort of people I would not want to work with.
Perhaps that's the problem, but they have to blame someone else? ???
Seems odd to me that desperateseagull has to start a thread about this every couple of months. Perhaps there's a reason for that, too......

At the end of the day if you dont like agencies, dont use them and find your own job. Simple really.
I recruit specifically for supply teachers, and Schools in Nottingham prefer using me (us) because, we Interview, criminal record check, reference, Check they are not peodos and make sure we can put them into a school at a minutes notice, saves them a bit job, and this is why we justify our fee. The alternative is kids going without teachers.

Before i start - there are good and bad agencies. I've worked with Agencies for the last 20 years and seen all sorts - jobs advertised that didn't exist in order to fill candidate databases to recruitment consultants picking up candidates at the train station and driving them to interviews.
But this morning, my pa got a call from an agent who insisted that they only wanted to talk to me because i had e-mailed them. He should have checked that my pa didn't have access to my e-mail account first :shootself :lolol: :lolol: :lolol:

Lunch over, so I will have to come back to you on most of that this evening (I WILL NOT FLOUNCE!!!!). What you have made though is a very valid point - market forces dictate that the crap consultants will lose their jobs and the bad agencies will go out of business. Therefore, market forces play a major part in regulating our industry, although other legislation is also having an effect.
The word "most" is very important in what you have said.

In my experience of recruitment agencies I shall say the following...
Office Angels - Shit unless you want to work at Inkfisk. Although the staff are polite
Adecco - Started off good, but when my 6 month temp work expired they couldn't be assed to find me anythig
Kelly's - Top notch, went in on the Monday and started a week later
Reed - :tosser:
Hays - Who??
Brook Street - Weren't interested in me at all, and come across as quite rude.

Why do you think recruitment consultants don't personally respond to everyone who sends in a CV?
Will they be more successful if they focus their time on getting new jobs on their books and speaking to candidates that they can place, or in replying to every Tom, Dick and Harry who sends them a crappy CV?
We all have to prioritise our workloads and don't have the luxury of keeping everyone happy if we are in a pressured environment.
Jim can't fix it for everyone.
Many job opportunities don't materialise because of last minute changes by senior management, reorganising departments etc It's a fact of life in the real world. Things change on a daily basis.
If you are not a candidate that can easily be placed, an agency will not be interested. They are in business to make money and not to act as a careers advisor.

without naming any agency names, this is what i have encountered so far, each incident with different agencies... i registered in person, I did their various tests, and they have my CV, proof of ID etc.. preferred positins/areas were clearly listed..
1- put my details onto previous employer, for the job I had just left (Iwas surprised at the much higher rate being offered, too!)
2- arranged an interview, but gave company 'x' a totally bogus CV -nothing to do with my career history, at all. very confusing, embarrasing, and a waste of time/trainfare.
3- a London agency arranged an interview, which was 'cancelled' at last minute (I had left home by then, for the train..), as the firm had already chosen someone they saw the day before.. this was before mobiles were commonplace, so a wasted a trip to London.
- i did get fare refunded though, after giving them a #8@!#* piece of my mind..
4- calls from various agencies, offering 'great' jobs in worthing, h/heath etc, for little more than minimum wage.. despite me making it clear i needed something local. i would end up further in debt, just paying the train fare!
5- unspecified 'temp' placement durations- a week? month? they must have some indication from the employer, as to how long they may need someone.. i also need to be able to plan/budget ahead, people!
6- 'temp to perm' jobs. no such thing as a trial period nowadays then? and double bubble i guess, commission wise.. (on temp rates, then siggning on fee as it were, when made permanent too.. how come the people actually doing the job dont get a cut of this, as i suspect taken off any salary a company may have offered, if i applied direct.
7- agency offering (temp) rates LOWER than the company had advertised, as they can get you in for an interview quicker..?!
my apologies to anyone who feels put out, but this is how it is.

He hasn't stopped denying it since then, but you if you don't believe me, you could just take a trip to the Notts board and ask about him.
And Jimmy Saville, I must concur - I had the same thing when Frank abused me in a PM. Within ten minutes I had SIX posters on here all regaling me with stories of what a wanker he is. And don't forget he's the only person ever to have lost their temper with Yorkie.

7- agency offering (temp) rates LOWER than the company had advertised, as they can get you in for an interview quicker..?!
my apologies to anyone who feels put out, but this is how it is.
edited for rant affcted spelling..:censored:
I really have run out of sympathy for you. My first job hunting tip is to take some literacy classes.
I'll try and look at your 1-7...
1- put my details onto previous employer, for the job I had just left (Iwas surprised at the much higher rate being offered, too!)
Agreed - not on. However, you clearly weren't very good at your job if the salary had gone up - not the agencies fault. Are you sure you spelt your previous employers name correctly?
2- arranged an interview, but gave company 'x' a totally bogus CV -nothing to do with my career history, at all. very confusing, embarrasing, and a waste of time/trainfare.
Clearly an administration error. A massive pain in the as and shite but it does happen in all walks of life, even John Prescott's office.
I totally understand your position on this. I would have expected to intercept your moving train or communicate with you telepathically. FUCKWIT.
4- calls from various agencies, offering 'great' jobs in worthing, h/heath etc, for little more than minimum wage.. despite me making it clear i needed something local. i would end up further in debt, just paying the train fare!
Not good, although I would consider Haywards Heath as local to Brighton - an easy mistake to make.
5- unspecified 'temp' placement durations- a week? month? they must have some indication from the employer, as to how long they may need someone.. i also need to be able to plan/budget ahead, people!
If they had timescales they would tell you... JESUS! It the COMPANY that dictates this.
The company decides your employment terms, not the agency. Please engage brain. Permanent agency fees are a cost for a service and are not taken off the employees salary unless you are working for an unbeliveably shite firm.
7- agency offering (temp) rates LOWER than the company had advertised, as they can get you in for an interview quicker..?!
No, the agency is making commission on you. This is how it works. Have you not established this yet?!?!? If your grasp on the recruitment industry is this weak i suggest you stop posting drivel about it.
PS - thanks for your PM apologising for any offence just before you posted this. You will probably gather that i have taken offence.

Well actually, you've diverted any abuse away from me haven't you. No one is on here posting about me or my profession you fucking fifty year old kid. In fact, two posters have PM'd me about recruitment advice this afternoon - hardly suggests that they think I'm a fool does it?

It is unlikely to wind anyone up beyond the age of twelve because it simply isn't true. You know it, he knows it, we all know it. And lets assume there are some people on this board who are in a position to screw his mum. Clearly you are unlikely to be one of those people because you're such a sad case that you only seem to marry trailer park trash, fat Americans (who then run off with your money) or desperate filipinos picked out of a catalogue.
It just makes you look like even more of a simpleton, Frank. If that was possible.

Oh come on! That was far better than - "I've fucked your mother" - your standard answer.
You've been posting utter tripe all day about people's mothers and children, then downright offensive stuff about Dwayne. I can't believe that someone of your age would resort to that. It's totally out of order and downright pathetic. Do you think that kind of behaviour is acceptable?

I'm officially flouncing. I'm not trading immature insults with a fifty year old man any longer. I (unlike some), have a life to get back to...

Frank,
You are a star in the making. Seriously, you have at least a couple of series worth of sitcom material in you.
Just sit down, write about your life (preferably mostly the stuff you put on here, you know, offering to fight/move in with/marry strangers on the internet, stuff like that, leave out the mundane I-got-up-and-had-a-shit-and-went-to-work stuff, just the funny stuff) and post it off to a few production companies, you will be RICH, you CANNOT POSSIBLY LOSE! I GUARANTEE IT!

Given Frank's propensity for sleeping with very old ladies, does anyone know if senility can be a sexually transmitted disease? It might explain a lot, I think.

Frank first talks about his Filipino bride, totally out of the blue.
http://85.234.132.19/showthread.php?s=&threadid=87058
Frank posts at midnight on new years eve/day. Nobody replies, what with parties to go to and lives to lead: (18:00 = eastern std time)
http://85.234.132.19/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13862
1) Frank tells Coventry fans that Hitler had the right idea in flattening the city (killing 1500 people)
2) Frank then becomes the only person in NSC history to lose his temper and get into a squabble with Yorkie.
http://85.234.132.19/showthread.php?s=&threadid=62133
Oceanic tells it how it is, but Frank lies as usual in a feeble attempt to cover himself

I could go on. Perhaps another day.

how's it going frank? We should have a Frank forum. Then again, if you do a search - put the word "wanker" in the text search and "bhaexpress" in user name, you get 115 enjoyable beetroot threads to read whenever you like.
