View Full Version : Sussex v Surrey @ Hove
I was there all day (well nearly) and a fine day it was. Grizzly batted really well and didn't look in any trouble at all. As Lord B says, both Ambrose and Tucker looked in a bit of trouble against the spinners - Salisbury in particular was spinning it a lot: a good sign for Mushy.
Let's hope they can crack on today. Surrey's very own pieman, Ormond, bowled a load of rubbish, we'll have second helpings of that. Declare at around 600 and have Surrey reeling by close of play.
No-one's mentioned Saqlain's marathon spell. 36 successive overs from the sea end; he bowled very well too.

Arrangments for tommorow's piss up at Hove
Right anyone else planning on coming to the Cricket tommorow, PM me and I'll add you to the exclusive guest list. Play starts at 11am and the plan is to get into the ground and start drinking as early as possible!
We will be occupying the main public seating area, which for those of you who do not know the County Ground very well, is straight up the steps when you come in through the main entrance on Eaton Road.
There are 12 confirmed for Friday so far, but it would be great to see a lot more of you down there!
Cost is £10 for a whole day's cricket, and the forecast is good!
Tempted?
Maybe this will help!

I did wonder whether sitting high up in the sea end seats (Arthur Gilligan stand?) would be a possibility, but then realised that a dozen or so inebriated blokes 30 foot above the ground might constitute a safety hazard on a number of counts. It's also further to walk to the Oranjeboom, so a definite non-starter.
Let's face it, we're going to have a party wherever!

England 73/3. Hussain out. I have to say that now he's not captain he's going to need to make runs now to justify his place.
Nasser Hussain could retire from all cricket at the end of the summer, if not earlier, his brother believes.
Hussain shocked English cricket when he resigned as Test captain on Monday, at the end of the drawn first Test with South Africa.
He is playing in the second Test, which began at Lord's on Thursday morning, but as a specialist batsman only.
His brother Mel Hussain told the BBC Sport website: "I would say with some degree of certainty that Nasser will not tour this winter.
"He wants his life back, to have Christmas at home, to go to a restaurant without having to field phone calls."
Nasser's second son, Joel, was born last November, in the middle of a tough Ashes tour that saw the England skipper appear mentally exhausted on the field of play.
If he walked after this Test match I wouldn't be surprised
Mel Hussain
Under new skipper Michael Vaughan, England face three Test tours during the English off-season, travelling to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
"The thought of going to Bangladesh for another series as a regular England player might not be as exciting as spending some time with his wife and kids," said Mel.
"He has given everything in the last 15 years and there's not a lot left.
"England are a stronger, more confident, better prepared side than when he took them on and the only thing they've not done is beat Australia."
And the older Hussain brother, who played county 2nd XI cricket himself, suggested Nasser would probably quit all cricket at the same time, ending his Essex career too.
"There is no suggestion he has set himself a time limit; it is purely a mental thing," he said.
Hussain's wife Karen gave birth to their second son in Australia
"If he walked after this Test match I wouldn't be surprised - if he got two low scores."
"He will have some regrets but he has to look forward."
Mel has not talked to his brother since Monday's resignation, but he believes Nasser will not feel any more relaxed now he has relinquished the captaincy.
"He has never been very good waiting to bat," he explained. "Getting runs in the middle brings the same pressure as captaincy."

Organised rain usually is associated with an identifiable weather feature, be it a front, trough or thunderstorm. When you get the vast blankets of dull dreary weather with bits of drizzle etc, that's not organised.
this is organised because it's associated with a Frontal zone (in this case a warm front)

What a game! 2 wonderful days of cricket and one of the best atmospheres at a county game I can remember. Sussex should do it but Surrey are not dead yet. We need wickets quick Friday morning.
Look forward to all NSC turning up on Friday to cheer the boys home.
Good old Sussex by the sea! :drink:
The Gangsta will be in attendance ( between doing a bit of work here and there as per last two days).
Cmon the Sussex - weve been waiting 190 years for this!
Don't rule Surrey out of this - they should manage to save the follow-on now - their tail has been awesome this season, but we should have a first innings lead.
Personally, before the match I'd have been happy with a draw if we could have earned a couple more points than they did - after the first day, I'd have been disappointed with a draw and I still think we can win this.
I'm there with you in spirit tomorrow but I have to work; I'll try to go for a coffee if a stand looks particularly stubborn.
Todays Forecast For Sussex...
A fairly cloudy day, Temperatures up to 22C, Warm, Gentle breezes from the south west, plenty of Oranjeboom down on the Sussex coast.

Well done Mushy. Must be getting that turn we were promised.
What do Surrey need to avoid following on ?
Billy Seagull
01-08-2003, 11:39
It might be in our best interests not to make them follow on, have a quick bat and set them a big total. Then Mushy can run through them tomorrow.....and all of us at work Today get to see a good match tomorrow :) :)
FatboyTim
01-08-2003, 11:39
Need to be within 150 runs, so 50 more, 280.
FatboyTim
01-08-2003, 11:41
Grizzly might not enforce the follow on, but just in case, and purely in the selfish interests of those of us stuck at work today, COME ON RAMPS!
Sonic The Hedgehog
01-08-2003, 11:41
Will Grizzly even make them follow on? Perhaps we'll bat again, try to score around say 200 fairly quickly and then set Surrey somewhere around 400 against Mushy on the last day.
Hollioake didn't make us follow on at the Oval as he didn't want to bat last.
It's all academic unless we get these last two wickets quickly anyway.
I reckon Saqlain could prove a dangerous customer...
Being selfish - yeah enforce the follow on. I'm off down there in a couple of hours and I want to see some bowling bowling mushy.
Top signature btw sonic
This is beginning to look ominous. 256/8 and Saqlain has just ton ked a 6. :(

Ormonds no mug with the bat, would probably be at least number 8 for most county sides, except derbyshire where he'd be opening

Surrey have a really strong tail - we're not the first side they've scored a shedload of runs against.

A draw would leave us in with a chance of the title.
Thought we were going to win this one at the beginning of today though.
Its the NSC possees fault thewir drunken behaviour is putting off the sussex players.
It's all right Fatboy, I went for coffee between innings :)
60-1,not looking too bad.
England are getting horribly thrashed at Lords.
That puts us 140 ish ahead for the loss of one wicket. We need quick runs to force a win now though.

They've clearly settled for the draw. Bad light stopped play just before tea and nobody seemed at all bothered.
I think the fans have been shortchanged, but at least there's no risk of a defeat. So the championship will come down to the run-in. And, sadly, that looks like good news for Surrey.
Best of the action today was the couple of hours of NSC v Man Utd Juniors which occupied the time between the main event coming to an end and the umpires officially telling everyone to go home.
keeping, keeping Trigger.
