In surprised so many of our fans are surprised by this. Our model is based on having older model pros around the first team who can do a job and set an example to the youngsters. With Lallana leaving resigning Milner seemed an absolute certainty. Perplexing how many don’t understand our model yet.
How many do you need though? Or are Dunk, Gross, Welbeck, Steele not model pros? Because they’re certainly experienced enough. The difference being they actually still contribute on the pitch. If we think he’s that good behind the scenes then give him a coaching role (at a fraction of the cost).

Would rather have Milner than Lallana. Hopefully the new medical team can sort his injuries out

I trust in Roberto's view. The club policy is to bring young players through early and you do need older heads around. But happy to say goodbye to Lallana at 90k a week. He was slightly taking the p because he couldn't last longer than 20 minutes on the pitch. So he did the right thing and leave.

Please show your workings.

Happy to say goodbye to 36 year old Lallana who was fit enough to contribute in 24 PL games (so far) this season - because he offered poor value for his (guessed) wages.

But happy to keep what will be a THIRTY NINE year old Milner, who was fit to contribute in only 15 - on equally high wages.

It makes NO sense.

It makes no sense at all to employ players long past their best, still living off their past glories, for wages which must be significant. It flies in the face of the ethos of the club which is to recruit young players with potential and develop them.

And Veltman, Webster.

If we really wanted another experienced head, surely it would have made sense to go for someone that adds something different to what we already had, such as a Spaniard / South American.

Milner is two and a half years older, has been fit even less than Lallana, and has been mediocre when he has declared himself fit.

At least Lallana was often GOOD in the 20 minutes he could manage!

Milner had better be REALLY good at this mentoring lark, because he offers precious little else for his wages.

Happy with that, great pro to have at the club.
We’ve been told many times that Milner is a great pro, is super fit, hardly gets injured, is a winner, a role model, etc, etc and with his track record and achievements it’s hard to dispute, however I do wonder how this has transferred and transpired at the Albion.

Other than a couple of timely tackles I’ve been disappointed to date, accepting that we don’t see what’s going on at training and behind the scenes.

Lallana was never on £90k a week. Capology/Spotrac is not your friend.

Adam joined from Liverpool, where he was on a reported £100k a week. It was widely reported he took a significant pay cut to join us. He signed a new deal last year on new terms which would have been lower than his original deal.

It may make no sense to you but presumably (unless they just make it all up on the hoof) it makes sense to the club.

This 100% - while i'm open to discuss different opinions it baffles me looking at some of the comments on here about Milner? The guy is in a different universe to Dunk and other senior professionals at the club due by in large but not limited to the fact that he's actually won stuff unlike most others (not including Welbeck). He's also been a model pro for decades and is a giant golden shiny beacon of experience for younger players and a huge boost to the club.

Why is that so difficult for some to grasp???

By that logic we should sign Kenny Dalgleish

This

It was also reported as Adam was a free agent we were able to offer him a considerable signing on fee in exchange for a lower weekly wage that didn’t break our wage structure.

As a pro he also knew his wages would go down as he reached the end of his career. I don’t know for certain but I imagine the new deal we offered him for next season would have been heavily weighted in favour of bonuses for appearances with a significantly reduced basic weekly wage. I imagine James Milner deal is structured similarly.

That's a very patronising attitude.

It isn't difficult for anyone to 'grasp'. Everyone here understands the theory - that a young squad needs some older, wiser, more experienced players to guide them.

That doesn't mean that we all have to agree on WHO those experienced players should be.

Personally, I'd like them to be a) more regularly available than James Milner, and b) able to make a more telling contribution on the pitch than the (38 year old version of) James Milner.

Why is THAT 'so difficult to grasp'?
